Summary of the project

Project Transnational River Basin Districts on the Eastern Side of the Baltic Sea Network - TRABANT endeavours to improve basis for the integration of significant ecological and management aspects in the Eastern Baltic Sea region, including links to spatial development.  The project concentrates on cross-regional co-operation between EU countries and also with non-EU countries. Consequently, the project compares, evaluates and tests methods and tools to be used in the key tasks in river basin analyses and management, especially taking into account transnational issues.

The project results will include recommendations and a guide book of river basin management approaches for transboundary waters, practicable in the Baltic Sea Region as well as in other regions in Europe.

The geographic scope of the project covers international river basins of Vuoksi, Narva, Daugava-Zapadnaya Dvina and Nemunas on the eastern side of the Baltic Sea.

Project has altogether 16 partners from Finland, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Sweden. The lead partner of the project is the Finnish Environment Institute. The project will last until early 2008 and partly, regarding Tacis part of the project, until summer 2008.
