Thresholds of Environmental Sustainability (THRESHOLDS)

New
Summary report from the expert survey on ecological thresholds in coastal areas has been published in the report series of the Finnish Environment Institute:
The significance of ecological thresholds in coastal areas. Results of an international web survey
Background
Ecological thresholds are sudden changes in an ecosystem quality, property or phenomenon. Thresholds of Environmental Sustainability is a project studying the concept of threshold. This multidisciplinary project is carried out in 22 universities and research institutes across Europe. The research is focused especially on the sustainability of coastal areas.
Thresholds-project provides answers for questions such as:
- What kind of policy objectives can be formulated based on ecological thresholds?
- What are the main social and economical impacts related to these policy objectives?
- How can these objectives be reached cost-effectively?
Threshold-project integrates a wide variety of case-studies with theoretical and conceptual research. Case-studies include different geographical scales, from local to regional and continent-wide level.
Thresholds of Environmental Sustainability is funded by the European Union 6th Framework for Research and Technological Development.
Research at SYKE
Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) coordinates one activity stream of the Thresholds project, focused on the biodiversity and ecosystem thresholds (Stream 5).
Additionally, SYKE carries out a research on the theoretical background for ecological thresholds (Stream 1) and participates to the communication activities (Stream 7).
Thresholds-project is active during 2005-2009
