Research Programme for Global Change 2002 - 2009

 

 

Most large-scale environmental problems are caused by pollutants transmitted through the atmosphere or by changes taking place in the atmosphere as a result of air pollutants. One of the main environmental problems caused by air pollution is global climate change. A multi-scientific research approach is needed in order to study such problems.

The objectives of the research programme are to assess the long-term effects and risks of both air pollution and climate change on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In addition fluxes of greenhouse gases and carbon storages are estimated and pollution control measures assessed.

The research programme provides background information for both national and international decision making. Policy oriented assessment work is carried out in relation to the activities of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (UNECE/LRTAP). Our results also contribute to the work concerning EU's air pollution directive.
