Website details

The www.environment.fi website

The website www.environment.fi is jointly produced and run by the following authorities, which together make up Finland’s environmental administration: The Ministry of the Environment, The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and those 13 Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres) which take care of environment and natural resource issues (former Regional Environment Centres).

The Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland (ARA) also belongs to the environmental administration, but runs its own website.

The English-language material on this website has largely been prepared by the Ministry of the Environment and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). The English version of the website is more limited in scope than the Finnish and Swedish versions. Certain pages may also be published in other languages.

Contents of the website

The English section of the site includes pages produced jointly by the Ministry of the Environment and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), as well as these organisations’ own pages. The pages related to the regional environmental centres and regional environmental permit authorities contain contact information and material on issues of importance in the respective region.

The main topics listed in the left-hand column of the environmental administration’s joint web pages correspond to the administration’s main areas of responsibility.

The front page and current pages feature the latest current issues, news and press releases.

The State of the environment pages include information on pollution loads and environmental monitoring.

The Environmental protection pages describe the administration’s work and aims related to environmental protection.

The Nature conservation section describes biodiversity in Finland, and the measures taken to preserve it.

The Housing pages provide basic information on housing and housing policies in Finland.

The Land use and building pages describe the aims and responsibilities of the environmental administration related to land use and community planning and building developments.

The Water resources management pages describe how Finland’s water resources are used and managed.

The Research section provides information on research work carried out by the environmental administration, including the results of some important research projects.

The International issues section covers the administration’s international co-operation, particularly with reference to international environmental agreements.

The Legislation, permits and forms section contains information on the most important Finnish legislation on the environment and housing, as well as details of internationally required permits together with application forms or information on application procedures. More detailed information on Finnish legislation is available from the Finnish Parliament.

The Business and the environment section contains information on the most important Finnish environmental legislation for businesses.

The Publications section describes the various publications produced by the authorities within Finland’s national environmental administration.

The printable versions of each page only contain the content of the main central column.
