Satellite observations

Satellite image base products are produced In Finnish environment institute in order to monitor environmental changes. These products are snow covered area (SCA) in Finland, Central and Eastern Europe, sea surface temperature (SST) and algal blooms of the Baltic Sea and water turbidity and chlorophyll-a in the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia. Also lake ice snow coverage of Finnish lakes is produced.

Remote sensing products  are based on optical satellite images. That is why the cloud cover often prevents the observation from satellite. The instruments used in remote sensing in SYKE are TERRA/MODIS, ENVISAT/MERIS and NOAA/AVHRR. From each instrument 1-2 images are received daily. Some of the products are produced daily basis and some are weekly basis.
