Snow cover from satellite images
The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) uses remote sensing data from multiple sources to produce information on snow cover during the spring. Information is produced using algorithms suitable for the target area. This facilitates calculation of the snow covered area during the melting period, or the water equivalent of snow during the accumulation period.
The snow covered area is estimated for two different areas: 5km×5km and 500m x 500m grid cells for the area of Finland and 0.05º×0.05º and 0.005º×0.005º for the Baltic Sea Region. Production of snow maps for the Baltic Sea Region forms part of the Polar View service, under the European Space Agency’s GMES programme.

Disclaimer
Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) / Geoinformatics and Land Use Division has produced these Remote Sensing products. The products are based on NOAA AVHRR (NOAA), TERRA MODIS (NASA), ENVISAT MERIS (ESA), RADARSAT (CSA) or AMSR-E (NASA) satellite observations. NOAA AVHRR and TERRA MODIS images are received by Finnish Meteorological Institute. ENVISAT MERIS images are received from ESA/Kiruna Envisat web file server. These products may be used for non-commercial purposes with the only restriction that SYKE should be mentioned as a source if data is used in publications or in presentations or made available to the public in some other way. In case of scientific publications which explicitly make use of the products the appropriate references are to be inquired from the remote sensing group (syke_rs_oper): group@ymparisto.fi [syke_rs_oper].
