Staying on others' land

© Juha Keronen

Visitors may stay on someone else’s land temporarily – for example to picnic, rest, swim or sunbathe – wherever everyman’s right grants the right to roam, as long as this does not result in any damage or inconvenience to the landowners. Visitors may also camp temporarily in the countryside for a weekend or a similarly short period, as long as they remain a reasonable distance from homes.

Where a longer stay is planned, the landowners should be consulted, as this is more likely to result in damage or inconvenience.

Camping is not normally permitted on public beaches and other special public areas. In larger official public outdoor recreational areas, campers are often directed towards certain areas or campsites where facilities are provided free of charge.
