Marine research, protection and sustainable use
The Baltic Sea is threatened by eutrophication caused by nutrient loading, by hazardous substances that are accumulated and concentrated in the marine ecosystem, by the increasing volume of sea transport and by the arrival of invasive species that can quickly change the structure and functions of marine ecosystems. Especially the risks associated with oil transport are growing.
The sea is used for many purposes and the pressure is increasing all the time. The pressure from various activities can only be kept under control through comprehensive and integrated planning, and it is of essential importance that methods of marine regional planning will be developed. Marine research supports the protection of the Baltic Sea as well as the sustainable use of the sea and the taking into account of various interests.
Marine research at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) aims at producing information and new solutions that help decision-makers to promote the protection and sustainable use of the Baltic Sea. SYKE integrates a wide spectrum of marine research, catchment research, climate change research and socioeconomic research. Multidisciplinary research makes use of observations, experimental research, numerical models, prognoses and socioeconomical studies,
The Marine Centre at SYKE is also responsible for oil spill response measures when an environmental accident takes place on sea. Moreover, SYKE administrates the research vessels Aranda and Muikku which are used for monitoring and research.
