The objectives of this study are to address the following issues: (i) the general need for adaptation to climate change in the agricultural sector; (ii) the potential and likely rate of autonomous adaptation; (iii) the need for planned adaptation; (iv)
the effect of climate change adaptation measures in modifying the environmental impacts of agriculture; and (v) the influence of other events and the broader context, notably agricultural policy decisions that may affect the possibilities and need for
adaptation. The study seeks to produce a initial overview of current knowledge and to identify specific areas where detailed adaptation studies are likely to be needed, i.e. the areas in which scientific support for planned adaptation is likely to be
necessary.
