South Savo Environmental Programme 2005-2010

The Future in Your Hands

The welfare of the environment  has a direct effect on human welfare. The South Savo Environmental Programme 2005-2010 aims at sustainable development with the necessary ecological, economic, social and cultural prerequisites to achieve this. The primary goal of the programme is to have a high quality of life in South Savo, with shared responsibility for the environment. With this in mind, the programme is built around the biodiversity of nature an environmental values and aspects. In order to implement the programme, the work is divided into five themes.

Goals will be achieved by concrete actions

The environmental programme is composed of environmental policies, lists of actions and responsibilities and  an environmental impact assessment. The policies include the principles of environmental maintenance and environmental values and goals.

The five goals of the programme:
- to protect the biodiversity of nature
- to actively improve the state of the  environment and the attractiveness of the area
- to use the lake shores according to a plan and to protect water supplies
- to use natural resources sustainably and run the economy in an eco-efficient manner
- to increase environmental awareness and develop highly skilled environmental professions

How is the South Savo region proceeding on its way to sustainable development? To assess the matter credibly, the South Savo Regional Environment Centre has established monitoring indicators to help in evaluating the implementation of sustainable development.

Broadly based preparation and participation

The South Savo Regional Environment Centre compiled the programme together with other provincial actors during the year 2004. The programme is based on a regional analysis of environmental impacts (a case study of South Savo Province), the state of the South Savo's environment and the direction of the environmental and regional development.

During 2004 and 2005 anyone could participate in the drafting of the environmental programme;  for example, by phoning in comments, or by sending comments in e-mail or regular mail. Three regional seminars were arranged to discuss local starting points. The environmental programme was introduced to the public in 2004. A draft of the environmental policies was on display from May 12 until June 30, 2004, and a draft of the programme was available for public review from December 17, 2004, until January 17, 2005. Altogether 35 different statements and opinions on the programme work were made.
