The Kvarken Archipelago World Heritage proposal was delivered to the Ministry of the Environment on October 7, 2004. On January 27, 2005, Jan-Erik Enestam, the Minister of the Environment signed the decision, by which the Finnish Government nominated the Kvarken Archipelago to be inscribed on the World Heritage list. The proposal was submitted to the world heritage office in Paris on February 1, 2005.
In the summer of 2005, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) conducted a field investigation in the area. The World Heritage Committee considered the proposal at their meeting in June 2006 and accepted the nomination to include the Kvarken Archipelago on the World Heritage List as an extension to the High Coast World Heritage Site.
Working phases
- 1996 The Nordic Council of Ministers publishes the report "World Heritage in the Nordic Region"
- 1997-2000 The first proposal is prepared according to the biological criterion
- 2000 The expert geologist Paul Dingwall from IUCN visits the Kvarken area
- December 2000 The High Coast is granted World Heritage Status
- 2001-2002 The second proposal is prepared according to the geological criterion
- April 2002 The provincial government of Västerbotten (Kvarken on Swedish territory) withdraws from the preparations
- 2002-2005 The third proposal is prepared according to the geological criterion + making the Kvarken area on Finnish territory an extension of the High Coast Site
- 2005-2006 The proposal is considered by the World Heritage Committee
- 12.7.2006 The Kvarken Archipelago is included on UNESCO World Heritage List
- 8.9.2007 The Inauguration of the Kvarken World Heritage Site 8 September 2007
