1. Integrated monitoring and modelling
Chaired by Paul Whitehead (University of Reading, UK) and co-chaired by Jack Cosby (University of Virginia, USA).
In this session results from modelling and monitoring on the catchment/landscape-scale are presented. A particular aim is to present studies integrating long-term monitoring and modelling data on element fluxes and mass balances.

Chaired by Michael Boy (University of Helsinki, Finland) and co-chaired by Janne Rinne (University of Helsinki, Finland).
Fluxes and exchange processes of gases and aerosols between forests and the atmosphere are dealt with in this session. Studies quantifying climate-change related processes such as net-ecosystem exchange of C are welcome. Up-scaling of such processes from plot-scale to landscape/regional scales is also an important topic.

Chaired by Melanie Vile (University of Villanova, USA) and co-chaired by Leon Lamers (University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands).
In this session studies on the impact of hydrological drivers (e.g. extreme events, droughts, snow melts, storms, and flooding) on ecosystem functioning and processes are presented. Also long-term changes in hydrological drivers (historical, modelled future) are considered.

Studies dealing with new findings regarding N-processes and cycling (e.g. N-fixation, denitrification) or new measurement techniques for N (anammox, dnra) are the focus of this session. Papers quantifying the importance of DON are also welcome.

This session will deal with the biogeochemstry (C,N, cations, and S) of peatlands (mires) and palludified soils. The role of peatland forestry, impacts of fire, and restoration issues will also be included.

Chaired by Tiina Nieminen (Finnish Forest Research Institute, Finland) and co-chaired by Ping Lu (EWL Sciences Pty Ltd, Australia).
Studies specifically dealing with the biogeochemistry of trace elements including both deficiency and toxicity issues will be presented in this session. Presentations on accumulation, availability and fate of elements, as well as on their impacts on soil processes and soil-plant interactions are welcomed.

Advances in the remediation and rehabilitation of degraded and damaged ecosystems (including brown field sites and mines) from the biogeochemical perspective will be the basis of this session. Studies using afforestation, oil pads, and phyto-remediation are invited.
